   “But that order hadn’t been issued at the time I was killed.”

   “It’s retrocative,” he said. “You have two deaths to go. Good-bye and good luck, Private.”

   And that was it. I should have known you can’t get anywhere with top brass. They don’t know how things are. They rarely get killed more than once, and they just don’t understand how a man feels after four times. So I went back to my trench.

   each of the four cardinal points sacrificial blood flows toward the
   ceremonial center, representing the “nourishment” that will enable
   the god, that is, the world of the spirit, to continue to maintain
   life in this world….

   For the Best

   Prring! Trudy blinks at the screen on the kitchen wall. It’s a text from Simon. She knows what it’s going to say. It’s time. Her body clock could’ve told her that, if she’d been listening to it – but she hasn’t, she’s been ignoring it for days. Dreading it. No use belly-aching, she tells herself (and suddenly there is an ache in her belly). At conception they agreed on a deadline, and this is it.

   That’s a bloody frightening story. Well-crafted and tense.
