On Thursday August 21, 2008 the editors of Transdisciplinary Digital Art performed a DJ/VJ set at Open Space, Victoria, BC, Canada. Exploding, Plastic & Inevitable redux, featuring: robot_mixeur (Corebounce, Santa Barbara/Zurich), Steve Gibson (Victoria), runran [ R3/\/\1X\/\/0RX member Randy Adams ] (Nanaimo).
runran’s VJ set was created using mostly material from R3/\/\1X\/\/0RX. It can be downloaded as a zip file from the IF07 server (warning, zip is 96MB).
The VJ engine works like this:
1/ All the letters on the keyboard activate animations. There are 3 sets of animations. Using the keyboard numbers 1, 2 and 3 will move you through the sets. There are some redundancies.
2/ The right arrow key layers a random animation under the one you have chosen with the letter key. Using the right arrow key you can change the underneath layer over and over at random. The left arrow key removes the layered image and returns you to the original animation.
3/ The best way to use the thing is to write down which key activates which animation. Once the random layer is loaded and playing, you can then chose a specific layered animation with the letter keys. It’s tricky, but you’ll catch on. It’s also addictive.
Further comments:
You will discover some pretty amazing combinations. The engine is quite inventive. It was designed by remix member babel quickly the afternoon of our IF07 VJ performance. A handful of animations have sound but that’s only because the sound was in the original swf files when they were loaded up. You can of course toy with this aspect when creating new animations. It’s set to run at 800 X 600 screen resolution but each screen resolution gives different and fascinating results.
You can create your swf files, then rename them to match the swf file names in the engine and drop them into the vj folder, overwriting the original files. You will discover at some point that the swf files you create might not appear in the VJ program exactly as you have created them. This is because of certain competing scripts. It’s a blast when you get something cooler than you actually created.
Play some electronic music in the background and have fun.
